Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi

BM Birla founded the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Asia’s premier engineering institute in 1955 in Mesra, Ranchi. In 1986, it was deemed a university under the UGC Act of the Government of India. BIT has seven extension centres across India, and two centres overseas. 12,500 students graduate every year from the institute, which offers an array of courses in various disciplines for graduate, post-graduate and doctoral degrees. These include: biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science and electronics engineering, information technology, mechanical engineering, production engineering, architecture, pharmacy, hotel management and space engineering.

BIT also offers research programmes leading to Ph.D. degrees in all disciplines of engineering, applied sciences and management. Over the years, BIT has played an instrumental role in meeting the talent needs of major sectors of the economy. It offers placements in leading organizations from across the globe through campus interviews. Alumni of the institute have made significant contributions to the country’s development. Many hold positions of influence in the public and private sector.

The institute has collaborations with international universities including prominent ones in the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom. Spread across 780 acres, the main campus in Mesra boasts lush green gardens and state-of-the-art infrastructure. In addition, the institute has also acquired an additional 50 acres in Greater Noida to set up a hi-tech centre.
